36-Hour Curfew Imposed in Odisha’s Cuttack After Communal Violence Erupts

Authorities impose a 36-hour curfew in Cuttack, Odisha, after communal violence erupts during a Durga Puja procession and VHP rally, resulting in 25 police injuries.

Authorities have enforced a 36-hour curfew in parts of Cuttack, Odisha, following violent clashes triggered by a Durga Puja procession and a Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) rally. The incidents resulted in 25 police personnel sustaining injuries, prompting the need for immediate action to quell the unrest.

The clashes, which originated from a group clash during a Durga idol immersion procession, led to fresh violence on Sunday, leaving at least 25 people injured. In response, the Odisha government has implemented a curfew and suspended internet and social media services in Cuttack to prevent further escalation of tensions.

Police Commissioner S Dev Datta Singh confirmed the imposition of prohibitory orders in 13 police station areas, including Dargah Bazaar, Mangalabag, Cantonment, and Lalbag, among others. The curfew, effective for 36 hours from 10 pm on Sunday, aims to restore peace and stability in the affected regions.

Additionally, the VHP has called for a 12-hour bandh in Cuttack on Monday, further complicating the situation. The clashes, initially sparked by a personal quarrel during an immersion procession, have now necessitated stringent measures to curb the spread of rumors and maintain public safety.
