The Russian army has made consistent advances in Ukraine, particularly in the eastern Donetsk region, according to an analysis of data from the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW). In October alone, Russia seized 461 square kilometers (286 square miles) from Ukraine, maintaining a pace similar to previous months. This strategic push by Russia has put Ukraine on edge, especially in the critical city of Pokrovsk.
Pokrovsk, a key city in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, has become the focal point of intense Russian military operations. With Russia eyeing control of this vital area, the city’s fate could significantly impact the overall direction of the conflict. The city, home to 60,000 residents before the war, serves as a crucial road and rail hub at the heart of Ukraine’s war efforts.
If Pokrovsk were to fall under Russian control, it would mark a significant shift in the ongoing conflict. The city is seen as the ‘gateway’ to the wider province, and losing it would complicate the supply chain to the frontline. Russia’s dominance in the Donetsk region has now reached 81%, with the country claiming to have annexed the area.
This latest push by Russia follows a pattern of territorial expansion throughout the year. While the pace of gains in October aligns with previous months, there was a notable surge in July when Russia seized 634 square kilometers. The region of Donetsk has been a hotspot for intense fighting over the past four years, with Ukraine struggling to maintain control amidst Russian advances.
