Wendy’s to Close 200-350 U.S. Restaurants as ‘Project Fresh’ Accelerates

Wendy's to close 200-350 U.S. restaurants as part of 'Project Fresh' initiative, targeting underperforming stores. Interim CEO Ken Cook announces closures of a 'mid single-digit percentage' of approximately 6,000 U.S. locations, with process starting late 2025.

Fast-food giant Wendy’s is set to close a significant number of its U.S. restaurants as part of its ‘Project Fresh’ initiative aimed at revitalizing the brand. The closures, totaling between 200 and 350 locations, will target underperforming stores across the country.

The decision to shutter a ‘mid single-digit percentage’ of its approximately 6,000 U.S. restaurants was announced by Wendy’s interim CEO, Ken Cook, during a recent earnings call. Cook highlighted that the affected locations have been consistently dragging down the chain’s overall performance.

No master list of the specific Wendy’s restaurants slated for closure has been released yet. However, the process is expected to commence later this year and extend into 2026, signaling a significant shift in the company’s operational strategy.

Alongside the closures, Wendy’s also plans to cut back on advertising spending and introduce new menu items to drive growth and improve investor confidence. The move comes as the fast-food industry continues to navigate challenges posed by changing consumer preferences and market dynamics.
