Tuesday, Nov. 11 marks Veterans Day in the United States, a federal holiday honoring military veterans. While the U.S. bond market will be closed, the major U.S. stock markets – the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq – will remain open for regular trading hours, as confirmed by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.
Historically, the NYSE used to close on Veterans Day, but since 1954, it has stayed open with a two-minute trading pause to commemorate the day. This year, the stock markets will continue operations despite the holiday.
On the other hand, most banks will be closed on Veterans Day, including Chase Bank, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Citibank. Veterans Day, originating from the armistice of World War I on Nov. 11, 1918, is a day of remembrance and recognition for the sacrifices made by military personnel.
While various offices and activities are closed in observance of the federal holiday, the stock market stands out as an exception, ensuring that trading continues as usual. The celebration of Veterans Day serves as a reminder of the bravery and dedication of those who have served in the armed forces.
