A newly constructed bridge in southwest China, the Hongqi Bridge, partially collapsed on Tuesday, sending large pieces of concrete plunging into a river below. The 2,487-foot-long bridge, connecting Sichuan province with Tibet as part of a national highway, suffered a fracture and collapse due to a landslide, according to officials in the Sichuan city of Ma’erkang.
The collapse occurred after cracks appeared on nearby slopes and roads, leading to the closure of the bridge on Monday as a precautionary measure. The incident was captured on video and widely shared on social media platforms.
No casualties were reported in the collapse of the Hongqi Bridge, which occurred just months after its opening. Chinese state media confirmed that the collapse did not result in any casualties at the hydropower station site.
