At least 39 people, including 17 women and nine children, tragically lost their lives in a stampede during actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally in Karur on Saturday. The event, which saw triple the expected crowd and half the security measures, turned fatal due to delays and overcrowding.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has ordered an investigation led by Justice Aruna Jagadeesan into the incident. Actor-politician Vijay expressed deep anguish, offering Rs 20 lakh to the families of the deceased and Rs 2 lakh for the injured.
PM Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh for each victim’s family. President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, and other leaders extended condolences and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
