The Union cabinet has given the green light to the Terms of Reference (ToR) of the 8th Pay Commission, which is set to overhaul the salaries of approximately 50 lakh central government employees. The commission will be chaired by former Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai.
During a Cabinet briefing, I&B Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the 8th Pay Commission will present its recommendations within 18 months, with a potential effective date of January 1, 2026. This move aims to benefit over 11.8 million central government employees and pensioners, whose last significant pay revision occurred under the 7th Central Pay Commission in January 2016.
Government sources have confirmed the finalization of the terms of reference and the selection of the chairman and members for the commission. The 8th Pay Commission is expected to conduct the standard once-in-a-decade review of pay and allowances for central government employees and pensioners.
